What is Payment21®?
Payment21® is a payment technology and financial service brand connecting consumers, businesses and financial institutions across the globe. Our firm acts as a payment service provider (PSP) operating a payment gateway specialized in processing alternative payment methods. We provide a state of the art gateway for businesses to accept digital cash, like Bitcoin, as a means of payment online and an OTC Exchange for buying/selling cryptocurrencies.

Why do you need identification documents from clients?
We need to collect basic documents for KYC (Know Your Customer) purposes when dealing with government-regulated fiat money. Financial intermediaries have to abide by government regulations to limit fraud and money laundering. There are regulations in place in almost all countries in the world for these purposes. As we are using banks and other regulated financial services to facilitate payments, either by accepting or sending legal tender, we have to ensure that we work within the terms of the banking industry and their governing bodies.
Do you sell digital cash?
We offer OTC Exchange services, enabling clients to buy/sell cryptocurrencies. To start, you are required to register an account on Payment21.com and follow the onboarding wizard for OTC Exchange clients.
What is your fiat exchange rate?
Market as published by the Swiss National Bank.
What is your exchange rate “buy crypto/fiat”?

Where does Payment21 get its exchange rates?
Payment21® consolidates market depth from multiple exchanges to quote a Fair Value Rate (FVR). The FVR shows digital currency compared to foreign exchange rates providing shoppers and clients alike with recommended average prices reflecting actual market conditions.
How do I send cryptographic coins and make digital payments?
You can easily send digital cash to any crypto address by entering the details into the payment field of your cryptocurrency wallet. To use your cryptocurrency wallet, just insert the receiving address, the amount, the two-factor authentication code and then click "Send."
Which Bitcoin wallet should I use?
Our system is wallet-agnostic. Any kind of Bitcoin wallet can be utilized. The customer is king. They are free to use their own wallet.
Which crypto coins does Payment21® work with?

In which countries is Payment21® available?
Payment21® is available in most countries around the world, and you can set your prices in your local currency.
Can I accept Bitcoin in my country? / Is Bitcoin legal?
That depends on the legality of Bitcoin in your country. It is legal in most countries and accepted as proper currency in many (like Switzerland).
I’m in a high-risk industry. Can I still use Payment21®?
In most cases, this will not be possible. However, you are free to register and start the onboarding process with us, we will perform a compliance pre-check.

These limits can be raised through compliance checks and account upgrades. Contact us by email to request more details regarding the applicable compliance tiers and transaction limits for products and services.
How do I raise my compliance tier?
By applying for a higher tier and providing the requested documentation. The maximum amount you can buy or sell is determined by the amount of information you’ve submitted to us. Larger transactions can be made with a higher tier level.
Can I buy cryptocurrency via credit card?

Yes, you can if you contact our customer support. Please be aware that the bank account holder must be the same as the contracting party registered with Payment21.com.

Settlement costs depend on the total amount of funds transferred. Generally, fees for SEPA bank transfers start at EUR 5.00, depending on the volume. International wires start at EUR 50.00, depending on the volume.
Can I cancel a digital cash transaction?
Due to the nature of cryptographic payment protocols, digital cash transactions cannot be cancelled or altered, once they are initiated.
Are refunds available with Bitcoin?
Actual refunds in the traditional sense of the word do not exist. Once a payment has been done it cannot be reversed. However, we offer refunds in XBT which are then simply separate transactions.
Can I earn interest on my funds held by Payment21®?
In accordance with the Swiss Federal Banking Act (SFBA) and according to the terms and conditions of our payment gateway, users of Payment21® cannot earn interest on their deposits.
Why should I use Payment21® when Visa, MasterCard and PayPal already exist?
The most compelling reasons for using Payment21®'s digital money solution instead of traditional measures like Visa, MasterCard and PayPal include extremely low transaction fees, settlement within minutes and absolutely secure transactions. These features make digital cash the most attractive option available to everyone and are unrivaled by traditional measures.
Credit card payments and PayPal transactions still cost about 3% per transaction and the settlement times run into days, with embedded risk of chargebacks and fraud. Whereas cryptographic transactions cost close to nothing and there exists no risk of chargebacks and fraudulent transactions.
Is Payment21® a payment network similar to my credit card company?
The web services provided by Payment21.com are branded under Payment21®. We have created a proprietary payment gateway for digital cash (e.g. Bitcoin) that differentiates itself from payment options like Visa and MasterCard. The difference being that Payment21® does not charge hidden exchange fees for cross-border transactions but applies comprehensive low-cost fees only. The Bitcoin payment network eliminates credit card use for internet payments altogether, by directly linking clients and consumers across developed and emerging markets. Most importantly, Bitcoin is a liquidity-based payment method, as opposed to an interim credit-based payment system with accruing compound interest, as is the case in credit card systems.
What are the benefits for clients?
Digital money has appealing properties for consumer transactions. Low payment fees mean higher profits for clients, or you can pass the savings on to your customers for a price advantage over your competitors. There are no chargebacks and no returns in cryptographic payments like Bitcoin; any confirmed transaction is protected by the full power of the network. Businesses can accept digital cash from any country in the world, with no risk of fraud.
Our solution is optimized for e-commerce, m-commerce and in-store transactions; from shopping cart modules to mobile checkouts, and point of sale solutions, we give you the flexibility to choose from any of these options.
What can you offer? How can I add Bitcoin to my website?
You can register on payment21.com and follow the steps there. As soon as your credentials are approved, you will be able to integrate our solution. We offer an API and Payment21® Button for clients via our E-Commerce solution. Additionally, you can send E-Invoices directly from your client back office.
How does it work?
After creating an account with us, we provide our clients with an API-connection that allows for every purchase in the shop to generate a separate cryptographic address, which is then used by the customer of the client to complete the payment. If the client decides to keep the cryptographic payment, this unique address is used as an intermediate address, and the payment is transferred to the client’s dedicated cryptographic address whenever the payment is made.
For the clients who decide to convert the digital cash into legal tender, we provide currency exchange services to convert digital cash into fiat money at the average medium foreign exchange rates on the applicable banking day.
What are your processing currencies?
Payment21® supports the following processing currencies, to name a few: EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, and JPY. The processing currency is the currency that is displayed to the customer on the client’s checkout page together with the Bitcoin pricing. The processing currency is the basis for exchanging digital currency into legal tender. For instance, if someone pays in digital currency in relation to USD, our system converts digital currency to USD and USD to EUR automatically by using the exchange rate feed published by the Swiss National Bank. This is a pure virtual conversion of the official mid-market reference of the central bank assisting clients to process various currencies at a fair conversion rate.
Do you process XBT to XBT?
Yes, but this feature requires customization. You require consulting services in order to obtain a proper reply to your request. Feel free to forward your specifications and we will be happy to provide you with a quote. Detailed cost estimates for custom-made solutions are available upon request. A customized quotation is charged at a flat rate of EUR 500.00.
How can clients accept digital cash (e.g. Bitcoin) safely when the price isn't stable?
While the day to day price of Bitcoin can be unstable, accepting digital cash via Payment21® eliminates the risk of market fluctuations. By enabling instant exchange and immediate settlement into legal tender you'll never have to hold digital money, if you don't want to.
Payment21® pulls real-time rates from multiple exchanges. This process ensures the best Bitcoin exchange rate at the time of the payment and conversion. The amount which has been converted into fiat money is then deposited directly to the client’s bank account. An almost immediate conversion from digital cash into fiat money eliminates the risk of Bitcoin price volatility. Therefore, buyers always get an advantage by spending their bitcoins at a Payment21® client, compared to selling them on an exchange.
One of the most important features of Payment21®'s processing gateway is our ability to guarantee the exchange rate to our clients on every order processed. Meaning, if a client asks us to collect an equivalent of EUR 100.00 in Bitcoin, as long as the buyer sends the cryptographic payment within the payment time window, Payment21® guarantees that the client will receive exactly EUR 100.00, minus our fee.
Can I issue payments in Bitcoin directly from the client back office?
Yes, if you utilize our API integration for inbound payments you will also be able to issue payouts in Bitcoin. However, such transactions are classified as money transfers by law. Therefore, the recipients of any disbursements have to undergo the usual AML/KYC procedures prior to receiving funds.
Do you sell digital cash?
Our E-Commerce solution offers payment services to clients. The processing gateway obtains conversion rates from various crypto exchange partners and hence, we are operating as a payment processor on behalf of our clients (E-Commerce clients running an online shop and vendors selling goods and services in a store). All we do is provide a safe and simple environment that enables clients to accept digital cash (e.g. Bitcoin) as a method of payment, and/or exchange digital cash (originating from customers purchasing goods and services) to legal tender. Settlement payments occur in digital cash or legal tender, depending on the client’s preferences.
Is there a test environment to test Payment21 processing?
Yes, please review our API documentation on GitHub:
And sign up for your personal test account here:
Do clients have to hold Bitcoin?
No, we exchange directly to legal tender and take away the currency risk from the client.
How do E-Commerce customers get Bitcoin?
E-Commerce customers can buy Bitcoin anywhere on the web. Of course, they can also buy from us via our OTC Exchange. Just go ahead and register for more details.
How much time do E-Commerce customers have to complete a Bitcoin payment through Payment21.com?
What are the minimum requirements from E-Commerce customers to be sent through the API?
What is a vendor?
Vendors refer to selling points (e.g. branches, affiliates, and websites) which are owned and controlled by the client on record; whereby the point of sale indicates the place where the transaction is completed.
Do you provide shopping cart plugins for E-Commerce?
Payment21® provides shopping cart integration with Magento, Joomla VirtueMart, osCommerce, OpenCart, and CS-Cart.
What is the mandatory information required from a merchant’s customer when sending a payment transaction?
The mandatory information for the purchaser profile is the following:
- Merchant ID
- First Name
- Last Name
How can I accept digital currency payments at my brick and mortar store?
You can easily accept digital currency payments at your retail store. Check out our E-Billing feature available through your account back office. This feature functions as a Point of Sale (POS) solution, enabling clients to issue invoices and accept cryptocurrency right over the Internet.
Can I cancel a digital cash transaction?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of cryptographic payment protocols, digital cash transactions cannot be cancelled or altered, once they are initiated. This is what allows clients to accept digital money without the risk of chargebacks, which essentially means that digital cash users must be careful when they send funds, as cryptographic transactions cannot be undone.
What fees does Payment21® charge for processing crypto?
If you accept digital cash and choose to keep those digital assets in cryptocurrency, there is a basic fee and the near-to-nothing blockchain fee to accept payments. Making a transfer to an external Bitcoin wallet address requires a fee of approx. 0.0005 XBT per transaction and includes the standard miner’s fee, so your withdrawal may be processed by the network as quickly as possible.
Are there any additional fees for online payments processing?
Yes, there are exchange fees for converting crypto to fiat and vice versa. A detailed view of our fees is shown in the link below:
** Fees are deducted directly from the settlement payment.
What are the types of Merchant Collection Accounts (MCAs) available?
Get an overview about the different kinds of MCAs for the different client types under E-Commerce. The following page provides a summary including indicative prices:
Is there a setup cost?
We do not charge for setup. However, customization fees may apply if extra services and features are requested.
How do you handle chargebacks?
The nature of Bitcoin does not allow chargebacks. Clients can, however, initiate a refund.
How long does it take for clients to receive payments?
We settle payments on a daily basis with a fixed cut-off time at 2pm Central European Time (CET). However, your definite settlement cycle depends on your volume and chosen payment plan. In most cases, you can expect your settlement to be processed on the first business day, after your customers make the payment.
Bank transfers may take several days to complete, especially if you have a small bank that uses an intermediary bank, or if you have placed a withdrawal request on a bank holiday.
What are the E-Commerce settlement times?
The client may initiate the settlement from his/her MCA (Merchant Collection Account). It takes 24 hours to clear the settlement transaction, and an additional 1-3 business days for international wire or SEPA transfers to settle.
Transactions will be cleared and settled within the operationally necessary timeframe and as per settlement schedule. The settlement cycle may be extended in case of weekends, bank holidays, volume fluctuations and regulatory reasons.
How often do you settle payments to clients?
The settlement cycle begins instantly and can be specified to meet your requirements. Settlement payments may happen automatically, taking your currency settings and the frequency settings of your settlement cycle into account.
The available settlement cycles for legal tender are: “daily”, “weekly”, “monthly” or “just-in-time”, depending on the client's transaction volume and chosen payment plan.
Amounts above CHF 5’000.00 or the equivalent in any other currency are settled “daily” by default. Amounts between CHF 5’000.00 and CHF 3’000.00 are settled “weekly”. Amounts below CHF 3’000.00 are settled on a “monthly” basis. At any given moment, the client may manually begin the settlement “just-in-time”.
Setting the settlement cycle to “just-in-time” enables clients to customize their minimum settlement threshold. This feature allows clients to withdraw their credit balance below or equal to CHF 5’000.00, or the equivalent in any other currency at their own discretion. Settling “just-in-time” supports clients in their effort to keep transfer fees in proportion to the withdrawal amount.
Can I withdraw my funds at my convenience?
Settlement payments are triggered through transfer requests based on self-service cash management. Self-service cash management means that clients can withdraw their balance anytime, at their sole discretion.
Payment21® collects and deposits all payments processed from the previous settlement cycle directly to your bank account or in accordance with your settlement preferences.
Do you settle in legal tender?
Clients may choose to receive a direct deposit to their bank account in local currency, according to the current market rate of Bitcoin. Payments in fiat money are released to a client’s bank account ASAP. Our short settlement cycle minimizes risk as funds are transferred as quickly as possible, reducing the client’s exposure and eliminating the storage risk.
In any event, you get exactly what you charge, minus our fees. The settlement of funds via bank deposit is included in all payment plans.
Do you settle in cryptocurrency?
Upon request, we can settle payments in cryptocurrency directly to your local Bitcoin wallet. Payments received in bitcoins are processed instantly to your Bitcoin address whenever a payment is made. Settlements in digital cash (e.g. Bitcoin) happen immediately (unconfirmed) or within approximately 1 hour (confirmed 6 times, which is the regular operational time frame given by the blockchain – the public transaction database). If you choose to take settlements in Bitcoin the minimum settlement amount is 0.01 XBT.
However, settlement payments in cryptocurrency are an add-on feature and require customization; we are happy to provide you with a quote.
What are your settlement currencies?

For all international payments from Switzerland to a country in the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA), the IBAN and BIC must be stated. If these are not given, the bank may charge an additional fee.

We can pre-approve such legal experts proposed by you or refer you to one of several that we are already comfortable working with. For your information, they charge a minimum of a few thousand Euro for this kind of work.

What are the ID requirements when doing foreign remittances with a Swiss Money Transfer Operator (MTO)?
In an effort to help combat money laundering and the funding of terrorist activities, Swiss providers of money transfers, so-called financial intermediaries, are legally obliged to identify their clients, to check the beneficial ownership of the money in question and, if necessary, make other enquiries. While banks and third-party processors like Payment21® identify their clients via the account obligation, specialized money transfer firms require a valid form of ID (passport, national identity card, foreign resident’s permit) for the transfer, usually for both the sender and the recipient. Apart from a valid identification document, additional documents may be required such as a proof of residence.
Do you invest in ICOs?
No, however, we offer technical services and advisory.
What are the legal requirements for a project to do a STO with Payment21®?
Payment21® is focused on utility token, payment token and hybrids. A project can do a Security Token Offering (STO) with us only if you are a licensed bank or securities dealer or exchange, or if you have partnered with such a regulated financial intermediary.
Do you offer processing services to STOs from the United States?
To include the United States of America, we offer a Reg D option for accredited investors and a Reg S offering for the rest of the world.
What does Reg D and Reg S in the US mean in terms of a STO?
In the United States under the Securities Act, any offer to sell securities must either be registered with the SEC in the USA or meet certain qualifications to exempt them from such registration. Regulation (or Reg D) contains the rules providing exemptions from the registration requirements, allowing some companies to offer and sell their securities without having to register the securities with the SEC.
Regulation S is a "safe harbor" that defines when an offering of securities is deemed to be executed in another country and therefore not be subject to the registration requirement. Regulation S provides an exclusion from the registration requirements for offerings made outside the United States by both U.S. and foreign issuers.
What are the legal requirements for a project in the US or targeting the US for a STO with Payment21®?
A US-project can do a Security Token Offering (STO) with us if you are a licensed bank or securities dealer or exchange, or if you have partnered with such a regulated financial intermediary. If you are not a bank or a securities dealer, a STO is legally permissible in the United States of America without having to register the securities with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) if the entity does a private placement with up to 20 investors. To sum up, in case of US-projects and with regards to projects outside of the US but targeting this jurisdiction, an STO is possible with Payment21® if and only if the token issuer is bank or securities dealer or exchange, or partners with the same, or targets not more than 20 qualified investors residing in the United States and registers as a Reg D to get the exemption from the SEC.
Notwithstanding, our Compliance Team must review the whitepaper and a legal opinion before going further.
What are the legal requirements for a project in the US or a non-US project targeting non-US jurisdictions for a STO with Payment21®?
In case of US-projects or non-US projects targeting non-US jurisdictions, an STO is possible with Payment21® if and only if the token issuer is a licensed bank or securities dealer or exchange, or partners with the same, and registers as a Reg S to get the exemption from the SEC.
Notwithstanding, our Compliance Team must review the whitepaper and a legal opinion before going further.
I am involved in the digital ecosystem and would like to discuss future cooperation. Could you kindly call me back and arrange a face-to-face meeting with a demo at your Swiss office or elsewhere?
We receive many such requests, but can only accommodate a selected number of cases. Our decision-making on distribution partnerships and technology issues is built around the cost-benefit-analysis of specific use cases. Therefore, it would help us if you could explain the basic premise from a financial perspective to begin with. Please confirm your thoughts about the following items by email:
• What is your business case?
• What is the envisioned time-to-market?
• Where could our gateway add value to the equation?
• Which of our products and services would you like to buy?
• Are you aware of our consulting services for Fintech companies?
• What kind of added value does your business intend to offer within the scope of the project?
• What exactly would you like to sell to us and discuss further with our procurement department?
• Are you ready to perform AML-compliance and do the paperwork required?
• What is the expected minimum/maximum volume, and the estimated minimum/maximum number of transactions per month?
In order to start working on the economic potential of the envisioned cooperation, we would be delighted to do a cost-benefit analysis and review the fundamental requirements of doing business to our mutual benefit. Please forward the details above by email first, so we can assign your case to a competent team member.

For key account clients in developed and emerging markets, Payment21® calculates the FVR on Bitcoin in relation to XDR. This ISO 4217 currency code stands for Special Drawing Rights, also known as SDR. XDR shows the daily value of USD relative to the SDR, representing a currency basket maintained by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC and used by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland, as a unit of account. Using the XDR helps organizations cope with foreign exchange rate volatility. Beyond that, we can quote in any other currency-pegged unit. By doing so, we follow the ISO 4217 currency code standards maintained by SIX Interbank Clearing Ltd.

The system is able to uniquely identify different payer accounts and merge them in case there are similarities indicating that the payer is one and the same person. How can I prove ownership of my Bitcoin Wallet/Address with Payment21.com?
We offer four different methods to validate the ownership of your Bitcoin Wallet/Address:
- Upload screenshots of your Bitcoin Wallet/Address showing your name and transaction details
- Send a cryptographically signed bitcoin payment including a unique transactional message
- Publishing an “address tag” that must be uniquely signed by the user of the Bitcoin Wallet/Address
- Provide a Blockchain Analysis report about your cryptocurrency-related activities
What do I need to know when uploading screenshots of my Bitcoin Wallet/Address?
The details of your Bitcoin Wallet/Address must correspond with the details of your client account. All relevant information must be clearly visible on the screenshot.
What is important to know when sending a cryptographically signed bitcoin payment?
We ask clients to send a micro payment including a text message from the Bitcoin Wallet/Address after reaching a certain threshold.
The user is requested to sign the transaction containing additional information in order to provide evidence regarding the source of the funds. The text message should read as follows: “I confirm that I am acting on my own behalf and not on behalf of any third party.” Using this method, the user of the Bitcoin Wallet/Address leaves a unique message on the blockchain, allowing others to verify the message as uniquely sent by the user of the Bitcoin Wallet/Address.
Clients are requested to upload the details to their account with Payment21.com. Further instructions are provided during the onboarding and due diligence process.
Transactional messages enable validation of user details when they are associated with incoming deposits. This method is not new. Traditional payment service providers and banks have been using transactional messages for verification purpose, as well as micro payments to verify account information, for a long time.
How can I add a tag to my Bitcoin Address?
Clients can demonstrate ownership by publishing an “address tag” that must be uniquely signed by the user of the Bitcoin Wallet/Address. The technical procedure is the same as when a transaction is signed with a transactional message. The difference is that it is more common because third-party services such as Blockchain.com can be used to publish an “address tag.”
What is important to know when providing a Blockchain Analysis report?
Clients can obtain a Blockchain Analysis report from an independent third-party provider in order to prove their transactions do not relate to dark web activities.
Alternatively, clients can request Payment21.com to generate a customized Blockchain Analysis report for them.
Clients are encouraged to upload a Blockchain Analysis report to their Payment21.com account during the onboarding process after their transaction volume exceeds a certain threshold.
Blockchain analysis is the process of inspecting, identifying, clustering and modeling data on a blockchain. In this context, it is performed in order to understand the origin of funds and prevent money laundering. By definition, transactions are considered to be money laundering if they stem from criminal activity.
What is the technical background of adding transactional messages to the blockchain?
Transactions in the Blockchain have inputs – records that reference the funds from other previous transactions. They also have outputs – records that determine the new owner of the transferred bitcoin, and which are referenced as inputs.
Each input must have a cryptographic digital signature that unlocks the funds from the prior transaction. Only the person possessing the appropriate private key is able to create a satisfactory signature; this is what ensures the funds can only be spent by the correct user.
In addition to transactions, the user of a Bitcoin Wallet/Address can sign a transactional message with the private keys by using the “opcode-function” to allow verification in the blockchain by other nodes in the same way transactions are verified.
In short: Putting the hash of the signature of a file’s hash in the blockchain links the holder of the private key to the signature. In this way it can be verified that the initiator of the signature is the user of the wallet because the private key of a Crypto Wallet/Address must be used to create the signature.
What does verifying a Bitcoin Wallet/Address mean for AML/KYC-compliance?
The data can be used by compliance officers, auditors and regulators to compare the user's name with the bank account holder's name in order to establish a paper trail linking the Bitcoin Wallet/Address and the transaction visible on the blockchain to their client's transactions.
Linking the ownership of digital cash like bitcoin with a user is done in a similar fashion as linking the ownership of paper money with its user. Depending on the context of the transaction, plausibility can be reached if the user of the Bitcoin Wallet/Address claiming to be the owner of its bitcoin can provide supporting documentation to prove it. The same logic holds true for situations where a purse with paper cash is used. Practically speaking, it is commonly known and has been fairly well established in the traditional payments world that the user of a purse containing paper cash is the true owner of the money – especially when circumstances are obvious and pieces of evidence are open to scrutiny. Consequently, the user of a purse and its paper cash is customarily assumed to be the owner of the purse and the money in it unless proven otherwise.
To establish a technology-neutral and legally permissible reference point, crypto-aware compliance officers, auditors and regulators in FATF-jurisdictions acknowledge that the ownership of Bitcoin Wallets/Addresses can be proven in context if suitable methods are utilized – such as one of the four different methods offered by Payment21.com.
